To think that for the majority of human history
the female sex was deemed not worthy enough
to have a voice and a say in shaping the future –
even though since the birth of our species
women have been responsible for shaping
the adults of the future from the time
that they were children and learning to walk and talk…
looking back now to how things were
it is unbelievable to think
that the majority of the male members of society
used to believe that a woman’s place was at home
and that they should not venture further
than their own front-door or the nearby convenience store…
I cannot imagine living in such a misogynistic,
sexist, and an unnatural world –
however, that was indeed the world
in which so many women lived in for far too long…
I have no idea why equality is such a difficult concept
for some people to grasp – but I believe
a lot of the reasons behind some people not being able
to see why women are the strongest of the sexes
is because of the inbuilt biases and prejudices
that have been past down from parentage from a young age
and a backwards looking view of the world
that is simply archaic and out of date…
there is nothing that disturbs me more
than the thought of what women
have been subjected to throughout human history,
and it is sad to think that no matter how far we have all come
that there are still some places on Earth
and there are still some people who do not
value women as they should…
it has been 100 years since women were given
the right to vote and allow their voices to be heard
loud and clear in the United Kingdom,
and I am proud to live in the here and in the now of the present
when, and in the country where, women are valued
and considered equal to men in almost all respects –
however, though the world has made a lot of progress in equality
there is still a very long way to go.

My Poem ‘Mum & Son’
There is a woman
who has known me all my life…
there is a woman
who loves her family more than anything…
there is a woman
who knows how important it is,
no matter how hard it can feel,
to stand up against an aggressive adversary
and to not give up
when you have got to fight to stay alive…
there is a woman
who looks just as beautiful bald
as she does with a full-head of hair…
there is a woman, a mother,
who has a son, Mark,
and a daughter, Clare…
there is a woman
who knows and who sees
the true face of love and happiness
in the eyes of her husband, David…
there is a woman… my Mum, Bernadette,
who has loved me, who has thought about me,
and who has cared about me every day
that I have lived…
there is no other like my Mum…
there is only one son for this Mum,
and only one Mum for this son…
there is a woman – a wife, a mother –
who daily does the impossible
for the people who she loves…
no matter what she has been through,
there is a woman who has continued
to smile, to stay positive,
and to never give up hope…
there is a woman
who is the eternal friend
to those who are blessed to know her
better than anyone –
her husband, her children…
there is one woman
who I am writing this poem for,
for Mother’s Day…
because I love my Mum!
My Poem ‘The Confidence of Man’
Everything needs a centre;
everyone needs a soul;
every world revolves around
a deep and distant light
that calls towards
what lies at their core;
everything in life
plays its essential role.
Having faith and holding-on to faith,
especially in people,
can be testing sometimes
on so many levels;
even God once questioned his own actions
in creating humanity,
according to Genesis in The Bible,
and sort to start anew
with a world-wide flood
after he was disappointed
that Adam and Eve disobeyed him
and listened instead to the words
of a serpent devil.
The entire history of Earth,
and the history of the human race,
is filled with tests of character,
spirit, and heart;
since the beginning of time,
life and light,
the entire universe has been a balance
of the Alpha and the Omega –
the first and the last;
even if your first attempt at something
is a failure and it does not resemble
the original blue-print that you had in mind,
it does not mean that the next time you try
to capture the lightning of an idea again
and bring it to life
it will not be better than you imagined,
and perhaps was always meant
to have not worked out the first time around
because it needed an additional surge
of energy and determination
so as to give it a new lease of life.
There is no such thing as failure,
there are only stepping stones
to the other side of a river;
there is no such thing as the wrong way to walk,
there is only going forwards or going backwards;
there is no such thing as bad timing,
because all that is meant to happen and when
will happen no matter what –
and whether you stand still, or not,
the Earth will keep spinning.
Life is about lying down
and then getting back up stronger than ever;
weaved into the very fabric
of the reality of the world,
there is a beginning, an end,
a meaning, and a plan;
life is meant to be shared
and lived together;
though we all may be imperfect
when we compare ourselves to other people,
the majority of humanity is,
in my humble opinion,
perfect in their imperfectness –
and just as no two people
were ever born to be exactly the same as each other,
to me it would be a failure in and of itself
to ever doubt or lose any kind of confidence
in any woman or any man.
My Poem ‘We’ll always have Us’
A name cannot do justice to a picture,
a picture cannot do justice to a person,
a person who is as amazing and incredible
as you are in every way
every day as the day
that I first met you –
you are not only a part of my life,
you are my entire world;
even the sight of the curvature of your smile
makes me happy beyond content –
because to me your smile, your face,
your eyes, your hair, your voice
is uniquely yours and like no other.
I believe, that you believe,
that you and I are of the same heart and mind;
you believe, as I believe, that you and I
have been meant to be together from birth;
I believe, that you believe,
that you and I are one of a kind;
you believe, as I believe, that to both of us
there is no one like either of us
anywhere on Earth.
I crave to hear your voice;
I need to see your beautiful face;
I live to be with you;
I would do anything and everything for you;
we both know everything
that we need to know about each-other;
this poem is my love letter to you,
the woman of my dreams –
who is a part of me,
as I am a part of you.
Some things in life are fate;
love that is meant to be knows no bounds;
you mean more to me than words could ever say;
when I see you, the love of my life,
there are only smiles to be seen
and never frowns.
People share things with each other;
some people will always have a summer,
a moment, a place, a time –
just as some will always have London, or Paris;
people just know when something
feels as natural as a beautiful flower of nature,
you and I will always have it all –
because, we will always have each other,
we will always have Us.
My Poem ‘To the dogs’
There is no more trusted,
nor a more loyal companion and best friend,
than man’s best friend;
there is no more attentive, comforting,
and loving, protector of a master,
than the part of the family
who loves nothing more
than to lie at the foot of your bed
and warm your feet as you sleep at night;
there is no more excited person on Earth
who could ever compare to the one
who would sit and wait for you all day long,
and want to greet you when you walk through
your home’s front door,
with an enthusiasm that feels sometimes
as if it has no end;
there is no more pure look of love
than that of your faithful family dog,
who is loyal to their owner to a fault,
and who would in a fight stand with their paws before you
and save you with every ounce of their bark and bite.
There is a bond that is bound eternally
between a dog and their human parents and friends
from the time they are a puppy;
there is a trust that is forged that is hard to break;
there is nothing gives a dog more joy
than making their master happy;
there is a beautiful connection made
when a dog is given a name by their owner,
and you can tell that after they realize
that the name that is being called in their direction
is in fact the name that has been gifted to them
from the wagging of their tail,
and it is an acceptance of identity and obedience
that cannot be faked.
A lucky child is one who grows up with a pet to feed,
to look after, to play with, to walk, and to wash –
however, the most important thing that a child learns
from having a pet is that love and loyalty are a two-way street,
and that if you show true love you will receive love back in return,
especially from our four-legged canine friends
who look at us as if we were a god;
man’s best friend can also be woman’s best friend,
and without their human best friend they too would feel sad and lost;
I still remember my family pet who I loved when I was a little boy,
who brought to my family great joy
until she fell into an everlasting sleep never to wake again from,
and in honour of ‘Jess’,
and every member of her wonderful breed and species,
this poem of mine goes out and is dedicated to the dogs.
