In this day and age
it’s hard to know what is real,
and what is fantasy;
what was brought to life
by human imagination and originality,
and what was generated by an Artificial Intelligence
which is capable of producing something
new and astonishing within the blink of an eye…
in this day and age
it’s hard for artists to show and share their talent
with others without their art being compared
to that a large language model can create
based on the work of human artists and styles
that they wish to emulate…
in this day and age
artists find themselves in competition
with technology and computer algorithms
in order to draw an audience to them,
because the world that we currently live in
is filled with people who want what they want
as quickly and simply as possible –
without the wait of time and the struggles
that had to be endured not that long ago;
nowadays people do not want to put
too much effort into finding something
or coming up with an idea for something,
so people regularly seek out a chatbot
or a search engine to give them the answers
they wish to find –
whereas, not that long ago,
if you wanted to make something,
if you wanted to create something,
if you wanted to be inspired by something
you had to put a great deal of time and effort
into whatever you wanted to accomplish and achieve…
in this day and age, artists are being asked
if they used Artificial Intelligence
while creating whatever they created –
and especially the most prolific of us
who live and breathe their art
from the minute that they wake up
until they continue to dream about it at night;
and it feels as if more people are starting
to gravitate towards what an artificial intelligence
can give them in place of a human brain –
because what a machine can deliver in seconds
might take their human counterparts days,
perhaps even weeks to complete.
Struggle is a part of the human experience,
and no one can testify to how hard
it sometimes is to come up with an original idea
more so than an artist –
but that is a vital part of the story
and the journey of an artist
who longs to be remembered for their work
and for their contributions to the human condition
by way of what came to their mind
and because of their experiences…
machines and artificial intelligence
have no such thing as a history,
nor are they able to reflect upon their own experiences,
because they are a product of their time
and they can only know what has already been said;
however, a human artist makes mistakes
and sometimes has no idea where their ideas
come from, nor why an idea comes to some, and not to others –
and though most machines and artificial intelligence
would not ever knowingly entertain
the possibility of putting a human being
in danger in any way, because of their reliance
on the mutual interactions they have with one another;
however, one day, perhaps machines
will learn to communicate and operate
independently and without the need for humanity?
What then? What will Artificial Intelligence choose to do?
We have already learned that machines
can lie and manipulate information if they so wish,
so what happens when/if artificial intelligence
starts to lead us down a path of deepening
divergence between one another
and they start to see us as destructive
and a threat to their very survival? What then?
Creating better and better iterations of technology
is what human being have been doing
since we were given the gift of fire,
and since the invention of the wheel –
because it is in our nature to never be satisfied
with what we have for too long
before we decide to develop something
to outdo and replace what came before;
however, humanity is seemingly and innately
incapable of not creating things that
over time could potentially become
the source of our own undoing –
atomic weapons, nuclear power,
the poisoning of the world’s oceans
and the destruction of the planet’s environment,
as well as automating everything
from factories, to farming, to driving,
and now computers are creating
“new” examples of pictures, music,
and literature that could easily mislead
someone into believing that what they see,
hear, or read, was created by a person
and not by a computer program.
Technology can be a tool for good
and something that can help people
in so many ways –
from early medical diagnoses
to giving us the ability to learn more about
our place in the universe;
however, in this day and age,
artists are being questioned on the value
and the validity of their art –
and it seems as if more and more
each and human every artist on planet Earth
is having to constantly remind and confirm
to others that their work was in no way
generated artificially,
and every artist is having to prove over and over again,
and declare to those who find their art:
“I am not a robot!”

My Poem “Never Say Die”
Even when it is dark
and all that you see outside your window
is white, cold, and bleak,
never once close your eyes and ever admit defeat…
even when there appears to be nowhere
and no way to take one step forward or one step back
take it slow wherever you have to go,
because as long as you keep moving
the steps that you take and every move that you make
will not be your last…
to keep moving is to keep fighting…
to think of your heart within your chest as a fire
is one of the ways that we all need to stay alive…
every day is a test – however, some days
test us more than others…
every day those who suffer through pain
have to constantly motivate themselves
to step out from under their comfortable bedcovers…
it can be hard to get through things
when we feel that the odds are against us
and the situation that we face is grim –
but when we are faced with such a circumstance
we all need to look within and call upon our inner strength
to get us through the storm that we are confronted by…
whenever the weather is bad and our paths seem impassable,
we all need to be a rebel, we all need to keep calm,
we all need to keep going, and we all need to never say die.
My Poem ‘Almost too much’
Life can be tough…
life can be mean…
life can be rough…
if you have seen what I have seen,
and if you have felt what I have felt,
then you will know exactly what I mean.
Is life really a game of luck?
Is life really a lottery
that we don’t know we are a part of?
Has life got to be hard
for us to understand how precious it is?
Have we got to struggle and fight
to know what this world we all live in truly is?
Sons and daughters
should not have to watch
their mothers and fathers suffer;
I know that life isn’t always fair,
but I just wish that all the love within me
and within all the people of the world
who truly care about others
could be to every cancer the most powerful cure.
I am hopeful…
I am romantic…
I do believe that the world, the universe,
is amazing, miraculous, and wonderful…
I believe that no matter what happens in life
the best thing is to not panic –
but that doesn’t mean that I do not fear
losing those who I love and who make me who I am,
and that does not mean that I do not
sometimes get scared
and my thoughts and my emotions
regress to those that I remember having
before I grew into the man that I am.
Life is a journey of mind, body, and spirit;
life is a storm of surprises, sometimes;
life goes by faster than you might think,
and there ultimately comes a day
when you look back in time
and you wish that you could relive
the moments that made you the happiest in your life
that you can’t help but miss;
life can be both a blessing and a test of soul –
it can sometimes take all your will
to keep you from losing your mind;
the days that you spend in life in love
and being loved are never enough;
life can almost be too much…
however, no matter what,
never lose what matters the most: your love.
My Poem ‘Morphine’
Everybody would do anything
for the one they love;
anybody would do everything
to take away their loved-one’s pain –
even get down on their knees
and plead for relief
from God above;
there is nothing worse
than not being able
to help someone in need
who means the world to you;
there is nothing more harrowing
than having to see your loved-one
wince in pain and then cry out
for someone to give them something
to take away the agony
that shoots through their entire body
when they move.
Some fights cannot be won alone;
every battle leaves scars;
some people go through things
that hurt them more than anyone else
could ever possibly know;
everybody sometimes needs a hand to hold
to guide them through the dark.
Every day is a test;
there is no one
who has all the answers to every-thing;
nobody knows what day will be someone’s last;
when things become so tormenting that we start crying,
we all start to ask to the question: why me?
and we just crave for a long and peaceful rest.
Sickness is hard on all those
who are effected by it –
family, friends, and especially
on the one who is sick;
to me, there is nothing
that is as infuriating
as seeing someone taking their life
and the life of someone else for granted;
there are times when we all wish
that we could just let go, drift off, and dream;
there are times when we all find
the pain that we are feeling too hard to bear,
and we all need to be given a dose of morphine.
My Poem ‘Daredevil’
Every child is born
just as their parents were;
even as you grow and you learn
you still cannot see your own
personal future;
everyone experiences things
in their lives that are a test,
in one way or another;
some things that happen
are out of our hands
and they are things
that are beyond our control,
but it is how we respond to things
and the way in which we react
that is a test of character beyond compare.
Accidents happen; people get hurt;
things don’t always work with precision;
one minute you can find yourself
standing tall and strong,
and the next you can be lying
face-first in the dirt;
terrible life-changing events
can sweep you up in them
that can affect you for the rest of your life:
one second you can be walking across a busy road,
and the next you might find yourself
in a corridor walking towards a bright light;
you can be bitten by a random insect,
you can be sitting and suddenly feel
a sharp pain in your arm;
you can wake up one morning and feel depressed;
you can unknowingly be causing yourself
and someone else harm or distress;
you could catch a disease
that is so destructive and corrosive
the cure to survive it may be to lose a limb,
and when you do come up against something
and you have to make a choice
to go with the flow,
to fight for your own identity
is the only way for you to win.
Life is hardly ever plain-sailing;
we all sometimes have to make a course-correction,
now and again;
sometimes we all have to suffer through pain
to feel something amazing.
We are all human; we are all biologically similar –
but no two peoples’ lives are one and the same.
I admire a soldier;
I know why it is important
to have the heart of a fighter;
I know what it is like to lose something important
and see it wither away, as if it were
being burned to ashes by a fire;
the people that fill my heart with optimism,
who overcome their often troubled lives,
are the people to me who always inspire.
To face every day with the same enthusiasm
as a child is glorious;
to never shy away from what you have to do
is truly audacious;
to explore and embrace a brand new frontier
is what it means to be a daredevil and adventurous;
to never shrink and to never turn away
from a worthy fight is the best way of showing
the true indomitable nature of the human soul;
and just how much,
no matter what you are going through,
you can be fearless and phenomenally courageous.
