My Poem “Environmental Clock”

Even though our planet,
our world, our home
is called “Earth”
when seen up-close, from space,
when the light from the sun
is shining upon it,
it can be perceived as looking
green or perhaps blue in colour;
however, at night,
if looked down upon from orbit,
you could be mistaken for thinking
that our planet were emanating
its own electricity –
especially when the veil of darkness
falls upon our planet
and the human population
decides to turn on their lights.

In actuality, our world is an ocean world
that once had one single, massive,
super-continent called “Pangaea”
that was the only island of Earth
to be found, surrounded on all sides
by thousands of miles of water…
and then, a long time ago,
for reasons as yet unknown,
Pangaea broke apart and began
to slowly transform into the shapes
that we see when we look at the geography
of our planet in an atlas, on a map,
or by looking at the world
as it is presented on a man-made globe.

Our planet is a sphere –
no matter what people who believe
that the Earth is flat will tell you –
and we know it is because
when it is seen from space
the edge of its surface curves
like a ball or like a glass marble.

Our world has not always been how it is now,
and some people often take the gift
of our world for granted –
especially the way that the majority
of its environment seems perfectly suited
to our needs – and that can be witnessed
every day, even in a picturesque place
that might be someone’s exact example
of somewhere that resembles
what a person imagines as their version
of paradise, when the evidence
of humanity’s often selfish nature
can be seen in the form of the litter
and the dis-guarded things
that have found their way into
our world’s seas which float
on the surface of the ocean’s skin
like the sores of some kind
of man-made disease.

Humanity needs to protect our planet
from itself so that the small minority
who do not think or care
about the repercussions of their actions,
nor the potential future that this current
generation and the previous generation,
are leaving for the next generation
to find a way to clean up
the mess left for them.

Our planet’s oceans are precious ecosystems,
environments, and homes for some
of our planet’s most diverse and beautiful
life-forms – not to mention that every human
alive is a descendant of the first mammals
that crawled out of the ancient sea
millions of years ago –
and everything alive has a right
to live somewhere untouched and unharmed
by a fellow species of this planet.

No one owns this world…
no one can predict what effect
our polluting of our planet’s air,
oceans, and land will ultimately have
on everything that makes this world
the planet that it is supposed to be –
but one thing is for sure,
no matter what we do
from here on out
to begin to clean up
humanity’s own mess
any way that we can,
there is no way that anybody
could ever entirely turn back
Earth’s environmental clock.

Happy Earth Day, everybody! 🌍

My Poem “Appreciation”

We don’t always appreciate something
when we first see them,
we don’t always appreciate someone
when we first meet them,
we don’t always appreciate what
something means when
it is first given to us,
we don’t always appreciate
what someone does for us,
until we witness the work,
the sacrifice, the effort that someone
might have had to put into something
so that people can keep living their lives
and keep doing what they like to do –
because, most of the time, in this life
most people are oblivious to
the other sides of life
that exist behind curtains, walls,
doors, barriers, even underground,
that keep the wheels of society turning…
nothing happens without first
putting some effort into something.

Everything comes from something,
something comes from someone,
someone comes from something
than someone does –
because that is the cycle of life,
that is the process of life…
life on Earth is a potent mixture
of chemistry, physics, biology,
psychology, origin, struggle,
discovery, knowledge, adaptability,
innovation, strength of spirit,
and it should be a choice
and a willingness
to want to better yourself
and make the world better for your actions.

Most people don’t appreciate
something until they
no longer have it,
and the people that
understand and appreciate
what they have should know
how lucky they are
to have what they have
and they shouldn’t wish
they had what someone else has.

Things happen for a reason –
even the things that
we wish didn’t have to happen…
most things and most people
follow a pattern of behavior
that they find hard to break free of
because when they are on
the same path that they know so well
and they might not often think about
anything else or anyone else other than
the result and the reward that they are going
to receive when they reach the end
of their current cycle of repetition.

Very few people actually know
or ever ask where, when, and how
something appeared before their eyes
to their overwhelming delight –
because no one is capable
of being witness to every step of the way,
nor every chapter of the story,
of how something found itself transitioning
from being something literal
into being something physical;
however, some people do ask themselves why
things are the way that they are,
and when they do they often times
they are unknowingly opening doors
to all the other worlds that exist on Earth
that surround us all,
and when some people step through
those doors and they take a specific journey
to a world and a life
that is so close but which feels so far away,
people can come to attain
an understanding about things,
about life, about people, about nature,
and gain a wider, deeper, richer,
and a more respectful appreciation
about what goes into making
the life that we see every day
and at the same time the same life that
we may find that we do not really know.

My Poem “Answers for Everything”

Getting back into
the swing of anything
is always hard, it’s always slow,
it’s always a work in progress,
especially in the beginning…
move to a new place,
filled with new people
who you do not yet know,
is always daunting…
getting used to a new way of doing things –
even when it involves a job
or an activity that you already know –
it can take you a while to get up to speed…
any time spent away from something
is time that you can’t make up for –
however, what you can choose to do
is to put your attention, your drive,
and your determination into learning
and perhaps re-learning something
that over time becomes second-nature,
releasing that intuitive gift
that has always been inside of you,
that has always been a part of you,
and letting your internal nature
and your internal voice speak…
I truly believe that some people
are meant to be who they are…
I truly believe that some people
are born with a particular destiny
and a path in life to follow
with particular things
that they are fated to achieve…
I truly believe that some people
are meant to be doctors, nurses, carers,
parents, artists, writers, fighters,
scientists, cafe owners, builders,
sculptures, truck drivers, cashiers,
messengers, movie theatre attendants –
because by doing what they do,
and while doing what they do,
they make a profound and fundamental
difference to the world that only they can…
I have always believed, ever since I was a child,
that I had a purpose, a meaning, a reason to be alive,
and to be someone and something
more than somebody with the depth to them
than that of a character from a dream…
I have always known, and I have always kept in my mind,
the fact of life that nobody in this world
is ever truly alone and that everybody
has a calling that fits perfectly into and with
whatever makes the universe what it is
and whatever the fundamental forces are
that govern the framework and the plan of existence
that was set into motion at the instant
of the universal big bang
and the answers to everything.

My Poem “The Greatest Gift”

It’s amazing how fast
some people can adapt…
it’s incredible how quickly
some people can adjust…
it’s phenomenal how some people –
especially children –
can go from one day being
“the new kid on the block”
to taking a giant leap
into assimilating themselves
into a place, a time, a mindset,
and a completely different way of life…
some children are born with the infinite capacity
to learn at the speed of light –
and there are some adults who retain
the same gift of lightning-fast learning,
even as they grow older…
it always amazes me how some people
can live comfortably in different extreme environments –
from places where the temperature could not get any hotter,
to the places on this planet
where the temperature could not be any colder…
it is truly unbelievable how hazardous
some of the places on this planet
where people have been born,
where people have grown,
where people have lived,
where people have thrived,
where people have built a life,
where people have raised families,
where people have chosen to spend
all of their time until the day that they die,
because they feel as if they share
a connection with such a place…
it is in our collective human nature to endure,
to overcome our limitations, to explore,
to do things that no one has ever done before:
like diving to the depths of the deepest ocean,
climbing to the highest of peaks,
traversing the wildest and the most dangerous of deserts,
or exploring the unknown wonders of outer-space…
in space, there is no air and there is no way
for anybody outside of a space-suit to survive –
but that has not stopped a great many of us
from wishing that they were astronauts
so that we could discover new worlds
and new knowledge to enrich
the lives of all of humanity…
becoming accustomed to something,
to somewhere, to some new way of being –
like the selflessness, the patience,
and the compassion that you must
summon from within yourself
when you are the parent of a child –
in my opinion, is the greatest gift
that humanity has ever been given.

My Poem “Autopilot”

During the day when I am at work
I feel like I am on autopilot –
while at night I feel free to be,
free to live how I want to live,
and free to dream while still awake
about the things that complete
my heart and make me happy.

Cycles and routines define our existence
in this modern age, as they always have
in one way or another, in some shape or form…
most living things have their own preference
when it comes to when they feel
the most energized and alive –
some feel their most inspired
while gazing up at a sky of starlight,
while others feel invigorated
when the first light of the sun breaks at dawn.

Sometimes we do things so often, day after day,
that they become second nature to us
and we do them without even thinking…
when something or someone becomes
a constant in our lives
we can come to believe that
a life without them in it would not be worth living.

There are times in our lives when we need to make a choice,
but we don’t know how to make it –
and when that predicament occurs
each and every one knows that we can allow destiny
to choose for us and let God take the wheel of our life
and steer us in the direction that we are fated to take.

Autopilots are great… autopilots are amazing…
autopilots are a simple solution to a complex problem –
however, where is the living? Where is the fun?
Where is the imagination that comes out of the random?
Life can sometimes be predictable
and what happens next can sometimes be predicted,
and there is nothing wrong with that –
however, in my experience, nothing can ever compare
to the act of spontaneity and living in the moment.

Sometimes, because we think that we can predict
the outcome of something, we can become complacent
and we no longer expect the unexpected –
and, in a way, that is a good thing,
because when something happens that our inner autopilot
does not know how to deal with
each of us is forced to adapt and think outside the box
that we sometimes feel trapped within,
and we must do what we human beings do best:
live, dream, imagine, and act on our instincts.

My Poem “Sapiophile”

There is always more than meets the eye…
there is always more to life
than any of us could ever quantify…
there is always more than you alone can find…
there is always more to a person
that is constantly waiting to come to light…
there is always history… there is always mystery…
there is always entropy –
however, there is always the improbability of nature
that always surprises us and maintains a natural balance
of order that has worked perfectly for billions of years
which gives everyone an opportunity
to see what they believe and to believe what they see…
there is always complexity in simplicity…
there is always music in silence –
even within the space that lies
between the stars of the galaxies of the universe
there can always be heard a cosmic symphony
that encapsulates the true meaning of life,
love, music, that plays so emphatically
that its beauty can be too much for some to comprehend
without feeling the fear that sometimes rises
from within those who gaze into the vastness of infinity…
there is something about the world
that always captures a person’s imagination
and makes them want to know more –
that which comes from our inner instincts and drives
to explore beyond our boundaries and leap
into a world far removed from the one that we know
and see every day in order to learn and understand
something wonderful that we never knew before
but which we had always been searching for.

My Poem “Every Day’s Eye”

Just like the delicate petals of a daisy,
every day we all open our eyes
and we see a thing of beauty…
just like the rise of the sun at dawn,
every day a new light is born
that brings new meaning to someone’s life
that they had never known before…
just like a downpour of rain on a hot summer’s day,
every day we can all find moments
of cleansing perfection that steals
all of our attention and brings delicacy
to the way that we see the poetry in the streets
and the gifts of reflection that we see in the mirror…
just like a feeling within that you want to shout out loud,
some messages that you read and some signs that you see
come to you in times of great need
and in ways that echo throughout your mind…
just like the multi-colored and multi-faceted world
that you see during the day,
and just like the shining sparks of light
that glow from a distance at night,
there lies an innumerable amount of truths
to be found when we look,
and when the delicate petals of every flower
of the universe open to reveal
the infinitely complex iris
at the centre of every day’s eye.

My Poem “Transmute”

The essence of all art is to transmute…
the art of being an artist
is having the gift to be inspired by something,
to be transformed by something,
and to create something that elevates something
to a new level of understanding…
the spirit of everything changes as it grows
and as it interacts with all that nature creates
when it endeavors to carve out a brand new groove…
the one thing that is irrefutable about life
is that it is changeable, sometimes unpredictable,
and everybody’s short time to shine
is something that is mutual…
as everything and everybody grows
their voice changes, the biology changes,
their psychology changes, the spirituality changes –
because life, in a nutshell, is all about change
in so many ways – even the sky above changes twice a day
from black to blue, and from blue to black…
the universe is not the same as it was when it began,
and neither is anybody the same person
their whole life through –
and that is a good thing, because what would a universe,
a world, a seed, an insect, a flower, an animal,
a person be if they were unable to transmute?

My Poem “Woodland”

You haven’t lived until you have been
up close to the flora and the fauna of a forest…
You have never breathed true fresh air
until you have walked through a paradise
of green parkland during the summer months…
You have never felt as blessed as me
until you have shared precious moments
with the one you love in peaceful solitude –
watching hummingbirds feed during the daylight,
or witnessing the lightning bugs
illuminate the darkness as they dance
through the air under the stars of night…
The face of nature is breathtaking…
I have seen sights beyond imagining…
As I have lived I have experienced things
that are like a time-capsule
which I can use to slow the passage of time,
to halt the march of the second hand of my life’s clock,
and to return me to the places above, below, and far-away:
among the clouds… underground… sitting on a wooden porch,
walking over a river with the love of my life, Melissa…
There were times when I was younger
when I regularly used to go out on my own
and be in a state of complete and utter awe
as walked amongst the amazing tall trees
of a thriving, lush, and inspiring woodland.

My Poem “The Golden Season”

Golden light beams down from above…
A feeling of comfort floods the air…
Brown leaves tumble and are carried by the gentle breeze…
Change is everywhere…
The ground is wet, making it slippery under foot…
Things look the same – but, as with every new day,
differences surround and reveal themselves to me…
It is a magical time of the year…
New stories are being written,
as Old tales are being retold…
The cycle of nature continues
and now it is the season of Autumn’s turn
to fall upon everyone like a flurry of red leaves…
This season of transition will herald the arrival
of one of our world’s greatest natural wonders…
This season will be when all the instruments
and when all the notes and the chords will be played
by the ever-present players of nature’s orchestra,
whose music will crescendo higher and higher
until the last leaves have danced and fallen
in time with the golden season’s symphony
until it’s last breath.
