My Poem “Universal Translation”

We all go through life
looking for connections...
we all venture far and wide
searching for similarities...
we all journey to places
hoping to make some happy memories
and to have some fun...
we all trek, voyage,
and ultimately discover,
the deeper that we dive
into the relationships
that define the human adventure,
that the frontier of understanding
is one that is infinite.

I always find it amazing and fascinating
when I meet someone who speaks
one of the same languages that I do -
especially when there is also
a meeting of minds that
instantly and naturally occurs...
I always feel fulfilled
after talking with someone
who I might have just met
who immediately recognises that
we have something in common
by the recognition of something that I am wearing,
because the near effortlessness
of our communication reminds me
that we are all meant to find people
who we can give back to and can give us
the best of each others worlds.

I have always been hopeful
and optimistic about the future, the world, the universe,
the possibilities of everything and everyone...
I have always formed bonds with
fellow enthusiasts of the same things,
the same places, the same areas of interest,
the same sources of escapism and enjoyment...
I have always known
that the only way to find commonalities is to use
the means at your disposal
to look beyond what is going on
around you
and follow the steps
to where people like me
wait to be found and reminded
that they are not alone...
I have always believed that
what and whom we choose to engage with
influences us in ways that cannot be quantified,
but the more that we meet and talk
with others who just want to
make the most of what fills them with passion
we find that we share a dialogue
that will forever be a gift
of universal translation.

My Poem “Hola!”

Hola! Hello! Hi!
Whether it is morning,
afternoon, or at night,
people greet each other
and reconnect with one another
to continue the experience of
synchronicity through communication,
by opening and closing their eyes
and by opening and closing their our mouths -
sometimes voluntarily,
sometimes because it is expected,
sometimes because certain actions
over time can become rituals,
sometimes because if certain
cultural norms are not met
people can be easily offended.

The value of something
and what something costs matters
a great deal to some people...
a single word, a gesture, a look,
a smile, a touch, can go a long way...
a memory, a thought, a consideration
for someone else can mean the world...
a message from someone special to us
can make our entire day.

There are countless instances
over the course of our life
when subtleties leave a more lasting
impression than those that might be
considered more grandeur in size...
the best way to tell whether someone's
intentions are honest and selfless
is always to look into their eyes...
there have been thousands of languages
invented since the dawn of humanity
when a small group used to look up
to the sky and dream, wonder,
worship, and ask for answers.

Whenever you find yourself
in a place you do not know well
it is always helpful and customary
to learn some of the "local lingo" -
and while on holiday recently
that is exactly what I tried to do;
however, since I have come back,
I have found myself having to hold back
saying the word "hola" -
Why? Because for days on end
I used that word over and over again,
more times than you can know,
to greet to whomever I came into contact with,
and now I have to retrain my brain
to once again revert back
to saying a simple "hello".

My Poem “In Their Own Words”

Words are powerful...
Words are meaningful...
Words can only have their required impact
when they are used in combination
with other words that interlock
either side of them in a sentence...
Words can be the key to deciphering
a particular reference...
Words can only mean what they do
when they have lived a life of interchangeability...
Words are used in unison with sounds and images
when we dream or when we wish to
convey a thought, an idea, a message to those
close, far, intentionally, or accidentally.

We can find words... We can lose words...
We can adopt words... We can save words...
We can build are world and a life with words...
We can watch someone be brought
to their knees with words -
because words have a weight to them,
words have a gravity to them,
words have a way about them
that when evoked in a certain way,
and when innunciated in a particular fashion
by a diction-endowed individual,
can open minds, ears, eyes, mouths,
to such a degree that allows for
the continuance of language, in all its forms,
throughout the infinite universes that harbor
many different worlds, many different sunrises,
many different communicators, authors,
dreamers, artists, writers, poets
capable of telling their own story,
but only in their own words.

Sunday Ramble: 23-10-22

In this episode Mark pauses his viewing of the 2018 film ‘A Quiet Place’ to talk about both the verbal and seemingly silent languages that he witnesses being used by people every day.

My Poem “Adopt a Word”

Many years ago now I adopted a word -
a word that would come to define me,
a word that would come to inspire me,
a word that would come to mean more
to me
than any other word -
because as soon as I saw that word
I knew who and what I was,
because I knew that that word
was me and had always been me...
over the years I have used many words
to describe what I have seen, what I have felt,
what I believe, what people have meant
and continue to mean to me -
but there will only ever be one word
that says more than I ever could
about what it means to be someone like me:
a dreamer, a storyteller, a writer -
but not like any other,
because the word that I found
and which found me
I have come to realize has a power of its own
that can open doorways to places,
that can bring back memories of the past,
as well as give the gift of a vision
of as-yet unrealised brand new worlds...
many people have read what I have written,
and when I am writing from the heart
then what I write in every way is all me
and my life, as told through my poetry...
many languages are spoken,
many languages are there to be read,
many people are constantly looking
for a purpose to their life
and for the reason why they are alive -
and from the moment that I started down
my path through life and I started to
see beauty in every facet of the world,
I knew that when I chose the word "Poet"
I had adopted a word that was in every way
who I was and who I would always be.
