My Poem “Hug” 🫂

For too long now
so many people have been
deprived of many vital things:
work, travel, entertainment,
and most importantly physical
interactions with friends and family -
but now we have all been given
the permission to engage in
"cautionary hugs";
if there could ever be such a thing?
Never the less, it is now permissable
for people to embrace their love ones
in close quarters and show physical
affection for someone openly
for all the world to see...
even though the virus plaguing
the world continues to rage
in variations across the planet,
some of us are now able to meet up
and talk with someone, inside somewhere,
in ways that for so long have felt
like distant memories or the stuff of dreams.

It's has been so long now since people
were able to kiss, hug, and be with
people who they know so well,
and it has been so long since people
have been able to interact with
someone of significance, face to face,
that it will undoubtedly be hard
for some people at first to revert
back to how people used act
without thinking with one another...
some people might be more than
a little reticent to eat inside a restaurant,
or to sit in close proximity to someone
who they do not personally know -
because they may have lost the meaning
and the importance at the heart of
why people want and need to have
close associations with other people
for the benefit of their own mental health.

I realize that everybody has their own
individual process when attempting to
adapt to rapid differences in circumstance -
and we all know how hard it was when we
were first told that we had to stay apart,
that we had keep our distance,
and that we had to protect ourselves from
what we might be unwittingly exposed to;
but there comes a time when enough is enough -
and to me, as long as the world
proceeds with caution down this
long and winding road back to normality,
and as long as people continue to volunteer
to do their part and be vaccinated
for the good of the many,
then why not give people to right
to have something and to give something
meaningful to someone else as simple,
and as a much needed and long overdue,
as a hug.

My Poem “For Bake’s Sake”

Because of the current circumstances
that we all find ourselves within
so many people have been forced
to stay at home, to stay indoors,
and to stay away from
close friends and family members –
and, as a result, there has been
an increase in the necessity for
Internet bandwidth so that people
who are at home 24/7 can continue
to remain in contact with
the rest of the world,
so that they can continue
to be entertained
by all the content that the various
streaming services have to offer,
and so that people can continue to
engage with rest of the world
via all the forms and all the sites of
social media and social interaction
while the majority of the planet
continue to practice physical
social distancing between one another,
and there seems to be no more
popular activity than people
daily posting pictures, videos,
and even live streams of what they are doing,
what they are making,
and what they are baking behind closed doors
while they wait out the time of being
locked down from the outside world
which continues to progress at
the only pace that it is capable of taking.

We all have to do something
to pass the time when we are being
asked to do as little as possible,
to leave the house as sparingly as possible,
and to not interact with anyone
anywhere other than with those
who live under the same roof as we do –
and some people have chosen to
become home bakers, artists,
social media streamers,
book readers, television
and movie watchers,
and they have chosen to share
what they are doing with their
time of isolation more so
than they would if they were able
to leave their homes if
and when they wanted to.

Time goes by so slowly
when you have to look
for things to do
to distract you from the situation
that you find yourself in –
especially when you and everyone
you know is attempting to live
under a shield of quarantine
in an attempt to protect the lives
of their family members
and the world at large –
and which is why the allure
of making things and using your time
to create something and to share
the process and the end result
of doing something worthwhile
is what so many homebound people
have chosen to gravitate towards
and will no doubt continue to do:
because if this troubling time
is reminding all of us of anything
more profoundly that usual
is that time is precious, life is short,
and our human societies are fragile –
and that is why I think what people
are doing to pass the time while
they at home is important,
and whether watching, writing, reading,
making, or baking, what people are doing
is for all our sake and not just
baking for baking’s sake.

My Poem ‘Percussion’

The pitter-patter of raindrops
against a window early in the morning;
the foot-falls of steps
outside your door;
the dial-tone of a phone ringing;
the rumble of a crowd of people
reverberating over a floor.

The sound of drums;
the strike of lightning;
the impact of hand against instrument;
the synchronous movements
and almost-balletic arm accentuation
that make the musical performance of an artist
that much more exciting.

The voice of an instrument
that is brought to life by its player
as it was always meant
to be played and heard is magical –
the tone, the depth,
the range, the indistinguishable
call to rise of emotions
that only they can elicit
and evoke is phenomenal;
like the vocal-cords that vibrate
that allow someone to speak,
the unmistakable beat,
like that of a heart,
is its most effective
when it is allowed
to reach its natural peak.

No two ears hear the same;
no two players share the same gestures,
nor the same emotional connection
to a piece of music;
no two pieces of art
can coexist within the same frame;
every member of the same band
shares the same feeling
of being carried-away
and drifting like a flurry of snowflakes
on the wind.

The music of interaction;
the melody of harmony;
the natural cycle of repetition;
the actions of fluidity;
the language of notes;
the knowledge of keys;
the memory that never leaves;
the gift that comes with ease.

While there is still music playing,
while new songs are still being created,
while there is still the sound of waves crashing,
while new lovers of music are born
and want to become instrumentalists and percussionists,
the world will go on,
the Earth will play on and sing as-one,
the sources of all joy sadness
will continue to drum –
and those fluent in sharing
the music of the spheres of the universe
will want to continue to play
with all their heart the music
and the instruments of percussion.

My Poem ‘Ticket Love’

In this day and age,
the convenience of being able
to buy things, order things,
and have things instantly delivered to us
in no time at all, is a great thing
and it saves so much time and effort;
however, I believe that above all else,
you cannot beat the personal touch,
the physical feeling, the face to face,
the one to one connection, the delight,
and the warmth of being eye to eye
with another human being,
and sharing brief but amazing,
insightful, and rewarding moments,
with a wonderful ticket agent,
for example – smiling and shining beautifully
behind the desk of their kiosk.

When you walk into a box office,
and almost immediately the lovely smiling
and welcoming face of the ticket agent
instantly calms you and makes you smile,
and their soothing voice puts you at ease,
and comforts you when you inquire about a show
and a ticket and what is on and what is good to see;
in very day life, you do not often come face to face
with a polite, wonderful, charming, confident,
hypnotizing, gift of generosity and happiness,
as you are lucky to do so at one box office in particular,
and one ticket seller, who when you meet them,
you firstly won’t believe your eyes
and you may not believe the beautiful vision
that you see is actually real,
and, secondly, you wont believe that
out of all the people, and from the all the places,
you could have bought a ticket,
you picked the best ticket agent there is,
and you got incredibly lucky.

Everyone, and anyone, comes into the box office
and books tickets to see a multitude of things
that you can lay to see:
musical performances, pop band tribute acts,
things for all the family,
lectures, dancing, artistry, comedy,
every kind and form of variety –
and one of the best introductions
to all the available performances,
are the agents that you can talk to
about anything and everything from the word go,
and when you meet one agent in particular,
and from the first moment that you meet them,
they are your favourite
and you will go out of your way to come back
and book with the same amazing booking clerk,
and have them remember you too,
and every time you do,
the experience may be as great
as what you are hoping to see,
and as great as can be.

I know a ticket agent
who is amazing at what they do,
who loves their job,
who loves interacting with people,
and who always gives a hundred percent
at all the she does;
I know a wonderful person,
who not only sells tickets to see things
she also sells hope;
I know someone, who when you meet her
she will fill your vision
and ignite an amazing and phenomenal spark of joy
in your heart, and you will forever be excited,
and overcome with entrancing ticket love.
