Ever since I was young,
capturing moments of time
with a camera has been important
to me and to my family -
especially to my amazing Dad:
who used to record home movies
of us when we used to go on family holidays
to Orlando, Florida,
in the United States of America...
when I was a boy,
my Dad used to take photos of us
whenever we would go somewhere together -
because to my Dad photographs
were like memories,
and because my Dad loved his family
and he loved sharing his life
with his adoring wife and his children
whenever he would look back upon
the joyous instances that he had captured
you could see in his eyes
what every second with us
meant to him.
Children grow up so fast...
families change,
especially when things happen
that are out of their control...
no matter how old someone is
everybody always daydreams of the past...
as we all move from place to place,
and as we all meet new people,
we all adapt and to wherever we are
and we all find ourselves
undertaking new roles -
and there are always things
that we hold on to
which always gives us a jolt of nostalgia
every time we hold them again:
perhaps something that we had
forgotten about that feels like
the piece of a puzzle
which reminds us of something
that once meant the world to us.
Family photos are both wonderful -
and yet bittersweet reminders
of who we were, where we were,
and with whom, once upon a time,
when things were different...
memorable songs are great to hear again -
but whenever you hear a certain song
playing somewhere, at some time,
everybody always has an emotional reaction,
and sometimes a particular song
can make you think of someone
you have lost but also someone
whose soul still feels close enough to touch.
The stories of things and people
often times outlast and endure
beyond those who they are about,
because everybody loves to be entertained
by the exploits and the adventures
of someone whose memory
and spirit is indelible
and sometimes tangible -
and there are times when
the image of something or someone
can say even more than
a thousand words about them could,
especially when someone who
is a natural storyteller shows
what and who meant the most to them
through whom they chose
to record and to remember
whenever they picked up a camera
and captured in every second
of their home movies.

My Poem “Behind The Scenes”
Behind the curtain of a stage,
below the surface of an ocean,
underneath the seemingly
calm veneer of someone's smile,
there always lies more
than meets the eye...
when you look up
at a star in the night sky
it looks so peaceful -
but if you were to actually see
the same star up-close,
instead of far away,
then you would see
a burning sphere of energy
that looks more chaotic and dynamic
than it does from a distance
against the dark backdrop of space
upon which it shines.
A lot of planning and preparation
goes into making something
look so seamless and easy...
a lot of rehearsing goes into helping
a company of people know
what to do and when...
a lot of hours goes into making
something transition into being real
after so long of just being a dream...
a lot of practice goes into
the performance of a lifetime -
even the most naturally talented
musician, singer, artist, or athlete
has to put everything into what they do,
even if that means having to forego
doing what others do
because they have to focus
all their time and attention
on being their best.
Like everything that matters
to people in life,
that from the outside seems simple,
so much always has to happen,
so much is always happening,
so many things have to
synchronize with one another
in order for an experience
to be considered special and magical -
and one of the things that is essential
is to constantly have faith and to believe,
because an infinite number of things
than could ever be known
have to happen for everything to happen,
every moment of every day, everywhere,
behind the scenes.

My Poem “The Leap Day”
Today is the 29th of February...
today is a day that will not
come again for another four years...
today is a day when women
traditionally "pop the question"
and propose to their significant other
and ask them to marry them...
today is an anomaly,
which also serves as
the solution to a problem...
today is a day that is celebrated
because it is only seen on a calendar
when it is a leap year...
today is when so many people
will be celebrating
the actual day of their birthday -
and not a day before or after it...
today is a day when so many people
will choose to do something
they have never done before...
today is a day when lives
will be changed forever...
today is a day that means more
than can be expressed in words...
today is a day when opportunities
will present themselves
that should be taken advantage of,
because what will follow
will only be known at a time in the future
when we are ready to see
and understand what happened and why...
today is not just any day,
because it gives us all
the gift of perspective
that time is not what we think it is -
because life is complicated and emotional
and sometimes not easily defined
in practical and understandable ways...
today is a day that has always fascinated me,
because it both exists and doesn't -
as if it were a part of
some kind of temporal experiment...
today is a day when the events of it
will not be marked again
for another four years -
so allow me to take this opportunity
to wish everyone reading this luck
for what is to come in their lives,
and also a very happy leap day!
