My Poem “In Spirit”

Sometimes we can't be
where we are supposed to be...
sometimes we find ourselves
living at a distance from
those who we share a connection with...
sometimes we can't reach out
and touch someone physically...
sometimes all we can do is use our voice,
while relying in-part upon
the previous impression
that we made once before,
to give someone a feeling that
though miles might separate
strong and unbreakable bonds
between multiple individuals
can and do exist that can go on to flourish...
sometimes outside forces dictate
what our actions should be...
sometimes invisible adversaries infiltrate
and can disrupt the balance of calm...
sometimes people are unable to say
goodbye to people how, when and where
they would prefer and have had to do so
virtually and in their own way...
it is sometimes torturous not knowing
when, where, or if you will ever see
someone you love again -
especially someone who has been
with you through so much
and who perhaps in the past
was able to keep you from
going off the deep end...
sometimes we all wish we could
turn back the clock, go back in time,
and talk to someone who
unfortunately we are
no longer in contact with -
someone who will always have
a presence is our lives,
even if, at this point, it is only in spirit.

My Poem “Opening Up”

Opening up is not always easy...
being honest about your feelings
is not always as simple as it sounds...
speaking freely is not always
as easy as it should be...
telling someone what they want to hear
might be the right thing for you
to do in the short term,
but as time goes on that same person
may need to be gently coerced
into changing their ways
in order to turn their life around -
because people sometimes feel caged,
people sometimes feel trapped,
people sometimes feel silently enraged,
people sometimes feel as if they
are on a journey to somewhere
they know they want to go
but they do not know the right path to walk,
nor do they have any sort of a map.

Discovering that we are somehow different,
but at the same time living a life in parallel
to someone else, can be both confusing
and exciting at the same time...
further exploration of what we feel
we know about ourselves can be like
having a revelation that changes
everything about the world
that you thought you already knew:
a lie can become the truth,
and the truth can become a lie.

Knowing how, when, where,
and to whom to open up to
can be like trying to cross a minefield -
because some people are more accepting
about certain things than others are...
knowing how and what to say
as accurately as possible
what you may have been mulling over
for what feels like your entire life
is sometimes something that needs
to be rehearsed in front of a mirror...
it can sometimes be easier to tell
a complete stranger your innermost secrets
than it can be to expose yourself
to those who have known you the longest -
because there is something about
talking to someone who you
don't even know the name of
that can make it easier
for you to open up.

TMHE – Episode #65: David Bowie – a tribute

In this episode Mark pays tribute to one of the most influential artists, songwriters, and musicians of the 20th Century: the late-great David Bowie – who this year would have celebrated his 75th birthday had he not died from liver cancer at his home in New York in 2016. All throughout his life Mark has been both entertained and inspired by David Bowie, and he been a fan of his acting and music career for many years; however, as a result of David Bowie’s death in 2016, Mark became even more inspired and influenced by the man and the icon – so much so that Mark was inspired to write and publish a collection of short stories, “Playing God”, that featured a mysterious “Man in Black” character who looked remarkably like David Bowie but who was not David Bowie… but who wore David Bowie’s appearance in tribute to him, for some reason. And over the years Mark has also written several poems and has gone on pilgrimages that hopes pays tribute to one of his musical heroes: the one and the only, David Bowie.
